A Modern Bathroom Designed for Indoor–Outdoor Living

This shower space serves as a passage between the main indoor shower and the outdoor shower area, allowing homeowners to rinse off after enjoying the pool while staying connected to the beauty of the outdoors. The design celebrates natural light, clean lines, and seamless transitions — a signature element of modern coastal homes in St. Augustine.

To soften the architectural elements and introduce warmth, the design team selected a White Oak hardwood shower floor as a focal feature.

Why White Oak Hardwood?

When considering wood shower floors, material selection is critical — especially in Florida’s humid coastal environment. White Oak hardwood was chosen for several key reasons:

  • Tight grain structure that resists moisture penetration

  • Exceptional durability and strength

  • Light, natural tone ideal for modern design

  • Ability to complement both indoor and outdoor materials

Unlike darker tropical hardwoods, White Oak offers a lighter aesthetic that enhances contemporary spaces while maintaining a timeless appeal.

Custom Fabrication: One Solid White Oak Platform

This custom shower floor was constructed as one solid piece using premium White Oak hardwood, creating a seamless and cohesive look. A defined border was integrated along the edges, framing the piece and adding architectural detail that complements the clean lines of the bathroom.

The solid platform design provides:

  • Structural stability

  • Visual continuity

  • A tailored, high-end appearance

  • Proper spacing for water drainage

The result is a statement piece that elevates the entire shower experience while maintaining functionality.

Sealed for Performance: Polyurethane Matte Finish

Proper finishing is essential for long-term performance in wet environments. After fabrication, the White Oak shower floor was sealed with a polyurethane matte finish to protect and preserve the wood.

This protective finish:

  • Shields the hardwood from daily moisture exposure

  • Helps maintain the wood’s structural integrity

  • Enhances durability in a high-humidity climate

  • Preserves the natural, low-sheen look of White Oak

The matte finish was intentionally selected to maintain a soft, organic appearance — allowing the beauty of the wood grain to remain the focal point while ensuring lasting protection.

Warmth Meets Modern Coastal Design

This St. Augustine project demonstrates how wood shower floors can redefine modern bathroom spaces. By incorporating White Oak hardwood, the design team successfully introduced warmth and texture into a sleek, architectural setting — seamlessly blending indoor comfort with outdoor relaxation.

As more homeowners seek spa-inspired bathrooms that connect to nature, custom hardwood elements like this White Oak shower floor offer both luxury and practicality.
